Rome’s public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the use of adulterated oil in bars in the Italian capital. 50 restaurants are said to have used the much cheaper oil of unknown origin mixed with beta-carotene and chlorophyll.
Italian media reported that the investigation concerns food counterfeiting and the distribution of stolen goods. It is said that fifty restaurants in Rome used the adulterated oil. The investigation started with an illegal manufacturer based in Puglia.
Origin of oil unknown
The fake olive oil was made from seed oil mixed with beta-carotene and chlorophyll to change the color. It was bottled with labels that read ‘extra virgin made in Italy’. According to researchers, the seed oil used is of poor quality and of unknown origin.
Even used in the canteen of the Ministry of Education
The oil was sold for a price of three euros per liter, while real, natural olive oil costs an average of nine euros per liter. According to previous investigations, it was used by several establishments in Rome, including in the entertainment districts of Trastevere and Testaccio, and even in the canteen of the Ministry of Education in Rome.
Due to climate change, olive oil production in Italy has declined in recent years (see video above).
The lower production volume, combined with higher production costs, has significant consequences: the price of “Olio d oliva extra virgin” has almost doubled. Now there is an increasing danger of inferior and counterfeit offers
