Death in airport crash – pilots couldn’t see second plane

After five people were killed when two planes crashed at Haneda Airport in Tokyo on Tuesday, the search for the cause of the accident is still ongoing. New details about the collision between the machines emerged on Thursday.

According to Japan Airlines, the pilots of the passenger plane had no visual contact with the coast guard plane that was rammed after landing. They also could not see the fire that broke out afterwards from the cockpit.

The Japan Airlines (JAL) plane collided with the coast guard plane after landing on Tuesday and burned out. All 379 passengers on the passenger plane were able to save themselves with the help of emergency slides. However, five crew members on board the Coast Guard aircraft were killed; only the pilot survived and was seriously injured.

Flight attendant reported fire
A JAL spokesman said the pilots felt an impact a few seconds after landing. According to a TV report, the senior flight attendant reported to the cockpit that the plane was on fire and asked the cabin crew for permission to open the emergency exits. As can be seen from the images, the cabin was already filling with smoke at that time.

On Thursday, investigators from Japan, France, Great Britain and Canada continued their investigation into the background of the accident. The completely burned-out wreckage of the two planes could still be seen on one of Haneda’s four runways.

The black box and a voice recorder have been recovered
The flight recorder and voice recorder of the coast guard aircraft that burned out on the tarmac after the collision have now been recovered; The voice recorder of the airline’s plane was still being searched for on Thursday.

Transcripts of radio communications with the tower released Wednesday showed the passenger plane was cleared to land while the coast guard plane was instructed to head to a location next to the runway, Japanese media said.
