To prevent abuse of this important democratic instrument, the government is committed to reforming the referendum law.
According to reports, the reform efforts include limiting cost reimbursement. The Green Party’s constitutional spokeswoman, Agnes Sirkka-Prammer, spoke in the “Kurier” in favor of only reimbursement of costs that can be proven to have been incurred in collecting signatures.
Sirkka-Prammer fears that a loss of meaning could occur if real political engagement “were lost in the multitude of mass-produced referenda.” “Legal adjustments are urgently needed,” emphasized ÖVP constitutional spokesman Wolfgang Gerstl.
These charges apply
Registration and registration of a referendum involves costs of approximately 3,400 euros. If 100,000 signatures are obtained, the referendum initiators will receive five times these fees back.
