Municipalities will be able to more easily impose a speed limit of 30 in the future. This will be determined in a resolution that will be adopted in the National Council on Wednesday evening. Areas affected include schools, kindergartens, hospitals and senior facilities.
Until now, corresponding speed reductions could be prescribed, but only with a certain degree of bureaucratic effort, such as drawing up an expert report. The measure is intended to increase road safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Another point is that responsibility for speed cameras should be transferred from the states to the municipalities. “The prerequisite for this is a transfer arrangement from the country in question. This can be issued as soon as the amendment comes into force (July 1),” the ministry announced on Wednesday.
Does everything stay the same?
This also stipulates that the traffic lights at certain intersections or entrances do not flash green. The new regulations do not go far enough for the SPÖ. Traffic spokesperson Alois Stöger and NEOS fear that everything will ultimately remain the same.
The PVV also has concerns related to the fact that speed limit 30 could be introduced across the board. They also lack a precise definition of where speed can be limited. Otherwise a mayor could do this for his private driveway.
Greens: “Contribution to respectful coexistence”
The coalition was again satisfied. Transport spokesman Herman Weratschnig of the Green Party spoke about an active contribution to respectful coexistence. After all, two-thirds of daily traffic accidents occur in the area. Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) sees this as an opportunity to reduce the number of accidents, air pollution and traffic noise.
