Takeover as chairman – “Concerned”: Meloni makes AI a central G7 topic

Date:

The dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) will be a central theme for Italy during its G7 presidency. “I am very concerned about the impact of AI on the labor market,” Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said at a traditional press conference taking stock of 2023.

Italy took over the presidency of the Group of Seven (G7) countries in early January. The country will host a summit of G7 heads of state and government in June. Right-wing populist Meloni said she wanted to hold a separate meeting in advance that would focus specifically on AI.

Also migration topic
Migration is also expected to be an issue during the Italian presidency of the G7. According to Meloni, who has been in power since October 2022, it is important to promote partnership with the countries of origin of the migrants. That is why the Italian presidency of the G7 will focus on the issue of Africa’s future. Italy is paying a high price for the instability in Africa, Meloni explains. The head of government spoke in favor of the African Union joining the G20 and described Italy’s approach to Africa as “not predatory” but as a partnership for mutual benefit.

New partnerships
To this end, the current government has drawn up the “Mattei Plan”, which envisions a series of “equal and beneficial” partnerships with African countries and countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. In this context, the energy issue is of strategic importance, according to Meloni.

The G7 heads of state and government will meet from June 13 to 15 in Puglia in southern Italy – a region on the Adriatic Sea that has always been considered a bridge between West and East. The G7 summit will take place in the idyllic resort of Borgo Egnazia, which is part of the renowned San Domenico hotel group.
