Two explosions in the southern Iranian city of Kerman killed 84 people (originally 103, then 95) and injured 284 on Wednesday.
Rescue Service Chief Miadfar explained the confusion over the number of victims with the devastating condition in which some bodies were found after the explosions.
According to state media, the attack was carried out with two bombs detonated about 15 minutes apart near the Saheb al-Saman Mosque in Kerman, on whose compound is the grave of General Qassem Soleimani, who was assassinated by the US in 2020. Numerous people gathered there on Wednesday to mark the fourth anniversary of his death.
The leadership in Tehran spoke of a “terrorist act”. The EU also condemned the attack as an act of terror. It was the deadliest attack in the Islamic Republic’s 45-year history. The background is still unclear.
“Terrorism is just a tool”
Iranian presidential adviser Mohammad Jamshidi has blamed Israel and the US for the attack that killed nearly 100 people at the grave of General Qassem Soleimani. “Washington says the US and Israel played no role in the terrorist attack in Kerman, Iran. Really and truly?” Jamshidi wrote on X on Wednesday (see post below). The “responsibility for this crime” lies “with the US and the Zionist regime and terrorism is just a tool.”
