Two subway trains collided in New York on Thursday. One of the trains derailed after the crash. According to the AP news agency, more than twenty people were slightly injured in the incident.
The accident caused significant disruptions to subway traffic throughout Manhattan, authorities said. The collision occurred near the 96th Street station around 3 p.m. A Line 1 train with about 300 passengers on board collided with an out-of-service Metropolitan Transportation Authority train.
Seven passengers and one employee were taken to hospitals. There were 20 emergency vehicles on site, including police, fire brigade and the operator.
“Two trains are of course not allowed to collide with each other.”
Investigators said there were no obvious signs of a technical problem; they are now investigating whether it was human error. “Fortunately, there were no serious injuries,” said Richard Davey, chairman of the New York City Transit Authority. “Two trains are of course not allowed to collide with each other. We are going to get to the bottom of this.”
“It was just really scary,” said 19-year-old Evelyn Aguilar, who described the incident to the New York Daily News. “People’s things flew through the train. My head hit the window of the door. Then my head was thrown against a pole.”
The metro system is outdated
New York City’s subway system is considered outdated – in recent years operators have suffered power outages, signal problems and other disruptions. The finances have also not been good lately. The corona pandemic caused a decline in the number of passengers and therefore less income.
