Confectionery manufacturer Ferrero has withdrawn more than 3,000 tons of its children’s products, including surprise eggs, on suspicion of salmonella and lost millions as a result. The contamination came from a filter in a milk-butter vat at a factory in Arlon, Belgium, said Nicolas Neykov, CEO of Ferrero France. It can be caused by people or raw materials.
Chocolate products made at the Arlon factory in southeastern Belgium contain salmonella, leading to 150 cases of salmonella poisoning detected in nine European countries. The factory closure and health problems hit its owner, Italian confectionery giant Ferrero, in mid-Easter.
“This crisis is heartbreaking. This is the largest product recall in the past 20 years,” Neykov told Le Parisien newspaper. However, the company hopes to get the factory back up and running soon.
Going forward, 50 percent of health and safety inspections will be performed by an accredited third-party laboratory, rather than just internal auditors.
