In a few hours, one of Paris’ most famous landmarks, Notre-Dame, will reopen. The security measures in terror-torn France are enormous. The guests of honor and religious dignitaries have already taken their seats in the cathedral, but the spectators in front of them look anxiously towards the sky…

The weather service Météo-France has announced storms and heavy wind gusts of up to 80 kilometers per hour for Saturday evening. That is why the opening ceremony was moved to the church at short notice.

3000 guests and many celebrities
3,000 guests are invited, including 35 heads of state and government and numerous celebrities from show business, business and society. The richest man in the world, Bernard Arnault, was already in the cathedral with his family. The head of the luxury group LVMH, which includes Louis Vuitton, champagne manufacturer Moët & Chandon and beer brand Guinness, has reportedly donated around 200 million euros for the renovation of the cathedral.

The opening of Notre Dame is expected to take place around 7 p.m. After a film honoring the firefighters and craftsmen, President Emmanuel Macron wanted to make a speech. Archbishop Laurent Ulrich then had to open the gates of the cathedral according to the Catholic rite by knocking on them three times with the bishop’s staff and then enter first. The guests were then supposed to move in, but this was canceled due to the severe weather warning.

Huge security measures
The security measures around Notre Dame are enormous. Access to the surrounding streets and squares was closed. Anyone wishing to attend the opening ceremony must pass through security checks. Police and military patrol around the cathedral. The fear of attacks is great in terror-stricken France.

Inside, the archbishop will first inaugurate the organ and sing the traditional hymns Magnificat and Te Deum. After the service, a cultural program will be shown, including Chinese star pianist Lang Lang. The classical concert, featuring French-Swiss tenor Benjamin Bernheim and star cellists Yo-Yo Ma and Gautier Capuçon, was recorded a few days ago and will be shown during the opening ceremony on Saturday evening.
