Cold and malnourished – “Katzenjammer” all over Burgenland

Date:

Kittens are constantly being discovered malnourished and hypothermic outside. Often thrown away by the lost mother. Also in animal shelters more and more orphaned velvet paws are donated. The volunteer associations in Burgenland sound the alarm: It can’t go on like this! The communities are challenged.

Some were picked up by hikers, already very cold and screaming with hunger. The others were rescued from a canal where the lost mother probably put them for lack of alternatives. Another litter of unkempt stray babies, whose eyes had already been eaten by maggots, couldn’t all be saved alive. Clubs such as “Wir fürs Tier” in Loipersdorf iB, “Die Streuner Oberpullendorf” or “Katzfatz” in the north of Burgenland are currently constantly dealing with such emergencies. In animal shelter Parndorf orphaned kittens are given up almost every day.

‘So much animal suffering could have been prevented’
The start of the baby cat season means sleepless nights for the animal rights activists who voluntarily (!) conduct community sterilization projects, care for baby cats and mediate to prevent further animal suffering. Because it is large, despite the applicable castration obligation.

Alice Siebenbrunner, President of “Wir fürs Tier”: “The animals often come to us with intestinal parasites and maggot infestations, we have our hands full making them healthy again. We want to thank everyone who does not look the other way, saves animals and stray spots.” In addition, she once again appeals to the whole of Burgenland, the municipality and national politics: “So much animal suffering could be prevented if the castration obligation was observed.” And whether there would be severe penalties for non-compliance. Municipalities are obliged to train citizens. Because those who ignore the law are responsible for avoidable animal suffering.

facts and numbers
In Austria there is a general castration obligation for all free-roaming cats and males (!). Even so-called farm cats are no longer exempt from this. Anyone who does not have their animals neutered will be prosecuted and at risk of being reported to the responsible district authority. Anyone who feeds stray cats is also considered their owner and is also required to take care of their neutering. Many communities offer neutering vouchers.

The clubs urgently ask for donations for veterinary costs and food. Contact details on the homepages and on Facebook.
