Two occupants of a sports car were killed in a serious accident on the German Autobahn 44 in North Rhine-Westphalia during an illegal car race. The car burned out completely. The two men from Dortmund who died were 20 and 52 years old and are believed to be father and son.
As a result, the driver lost control of the steering wheel at high speed at the Dortmund/Unna junction towards Kassel. The Porsche 911 GT3 shot off the road, dismantled several trees due to the force of the impact and burst into flames after a few hundred metres.
According to information from “Bild”, the driver is said to have entered the exit at a speed of more than 200 km/h, which may have caused his Porsche to skid on a treacherous bump.
The second driver fled
Based on specific information from a witness about a second car involved in the alleged race, the director investigated overnight. The investigation quickly led to a 39-year-old Mercedes driver suspected of involvement in the race. The man fled the scene of the accident.
Police temporarily arrested the Mercedes driver at his home address in Dortmund at 21:59 and confiscated the man’s car, driver’s license, mobile phone and clothing. After the initial investigation into the suspicion and interrogation were completed, the man from Dortmund was released that night.
Tracks are being evaluated
The traces that the police have secured at the scene of the accident and the data from the on-board electronics of the Porsche and the Mercedes that still need to be secured are part of further extensive investigation.
During the registration of the accident, the A44 was temporarily closed in both directions. The entrance to the A1 towards Cologne was also affected. The route is now open again.
