On Wednesday afternoon, a man (56) in Gumpoldskirchen (Lower Austria) was probably loading several tons into a freight elevator when the elevator’s steel cable probably broke. The man fell down two floors together with the elevator cage and became trapped under the elevator.
At around 1:00 p.m., dramatic scenes occurred in a restaurant in Gumpoldskirchen in the Mödling district. When several barrels were being loaded into a freight elevator, the steel cable of the freight elevator probably broke. As a result, the elevator cage rushed down two floors – a 56-year-old man who was transporting the barrels to the elevator was also swept away. He was trapped in a cellar under the freight elevator.
Flown to hospital with serious injuries
The alerted fire brigades of Gumpoldskirchen and Guntramsdorf were able to free the man quickly and hand him over to the emergency doctor present. He suffered serious injuries and was flown to the University Hospital St. Pölten by the rescue helicopter “Christophorus 9”.
