Argentina lost 2-1 after a review of VAR after the match was suspended with a 2–2 draw, but the final result was not confirmed until two hours later, when the match resumed.
“The soccer match in between Argentina and Morocco at the stadium Saint-Etienne has been suspended due to the invasion of the field of play by a small number of spectators,” the organizers of the Games said.
When order was restored and the teams left the field following a raid in which security personnel chased some fans around the pitch, it became clear that the match was not over, but suspended.
The teams reappeared to finish the game in an empty stadium, playing three minutes and 15 seconds after VAR completed his review and disallowed the goal, in a chaotic start to the competition.
“The match continued and ended without incident. Paris 2024 is working with stakeholders to understand the causes and determine appropriate actions.”
The Argentinian Cristian Medinscored one in extra time to salvage what looked to be a 2-2 draw, but the decision to disallow the goal for offside following a review by VAR It came about two hours after the game was suspended.
