The fire hose of tomorrow floats in the air

Date:

Firefighting operations always pose a risk to firefighters, especially when they have to venture into burning buildings or extinguish difficult-to-reach areas. A new high-tech fire hose from Japan aims to minimize the risk by not requiring a firefighter to handle it.

The ‘flying dragon’, developed by scientists at Akita University in northern Japan, appears at first glance to be a particularly flexible robot arm. But it is hollow: it is a steerable ‘flying’ snake equipped with real-time control systems and brought into the danger zone by a robotic vehicle. The idea behind the fire extinguisher is as simple as it is ingenious.
