On the night from Saturday to Sunday, a driver (42) turned his vehicle in the Plabutsch tunnel in Graz because the navigation device asked him to do so. Fortunately, no one was injured during the ghost ride.
A Kosovar living in Germany drove his car on the A9 from Hügelsheim towards Linz around 10:40 p.m. Shortly after entering the Plabutsch Tunnel, the navigation system asked the man to turn around – and the 42-year-old actually followed the instructions!
He stopped in a breakdown port and turned around. He then drove in the opposite direction into the tunnel for approximately 1,600 meters in the second lane.
Tunnel had to be closed
Due to the wrong-way driver, the tunnel towards Linz was closed by the tunnel control center and traffic was diverted via the city area. When the driver realized his mistake, he turned around in the tunnel and continued in the right direction.
The man was stopped and checked in the tunnel by the patrol. An alcohol test was negative and charges are now being filed against the 42-year-old.
