New Zealand: speech in Parliament with Maori dance “Haka”

Date:

The young New Zealand politician Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke caused a real internet hype with her inaugural speech in parliament. The 21-year-old sang a traditional Maori dance song, the ‘Haka’, during her speech.

The “Haka”, wrongly reduced to a war dance, is often danced as a greeting or during other ceremonies. 21-year-old young politician Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke performed a ‘haka’ during her inaugural speech after addressing the Speaker of Parliament and other MPs to greet her.

Spectators participated in “Haka”.
The audience in the gallery then joined in. In her speech, the young parliamentarian, New Zealand’s youngest MP in 170 years, addressed climate and environmental issues, among other things.

The 21-year-old sits in parliament for the Maori Party. The party, founded in 2004, tries to translate the specific interests of the Maori into concrete policy, which is not always easy historically and practically.
