Days stuck – Slovenia: Five people rescued from cave

Date:

Five people were rescued in Slovenia on Monday who had been trapped in a karst cave since Saturday. A family of three and two guides trapped in the partially flooded Križna Jama (Cave of the Cross) were rescued in the afternoon after the water level dropped sufficiently.

Everyone was in good condition and in a good mood, the rescuers said after the successfully completed operation.

Spent two nights in a cave
The rescue operation began Monday morning and by around 3 p.m. rescuers had extracted all five adults aged between 22 and 58 from the cave, Slovenian media reported. The prisoners spent two nights in the cave.

Previously, rescue was not possible due to flooded passages; the group could only be reached by cave divers. It was not until Monday evening that the water level dropped sufficiently.

Enclosed by water during cave tour
Three tourists and two cave guides left Saturday morning for an hour-long tour of the cave. The water rose during the journey and flooded narrow passages, making return impossible. The group became stuck about 1.5 miles from the entrance and climbed to safety on a plateau. When the group did not return at the scheduled time on Saturday afternoon, the rescue operation was launched.

This was the first incident of its kind in the popular Križna Jama cave, located near Cerknica, about 50 kilometers south of the capital Ljubljana. The cave can only be entered with professional guides; the tours are fully booked well over a year in advance.
