The Vienna Museum on Karlsplatz, which reopened at the beginning of December and was completely redesigned, generated a huge flow of visitors: 62,000 people came in the first four weeks to see the entire history of Vienna, from long before Roman times to the present . Matti Bunzl, director of the Vienna Museum, provided insight into the krone.tv interview…
“We have over a million objects from Viennese history in our collection, of which the most interesting 1,700 can now be seen in the new museum. The essence of the museum is to present the original objects and not to offer a digitization show. We show Vienna as it really was and is.”
In the large museum hall, for example, the enormous Praterwal “Poldi” and the beautiful mayor’s carriage hang from the ceiling, and the original lettering of the former Südbahnhof can also be seen. Bunzl: “There are a total of 13 chapters from the time of 8000 BC to the present. It was particularly intensive for us to answer the question of what should be shown and what we should consciously leave out.” This decision involved hundreds of people to visualize the entire development of Vienna on a total of 3,300 square meters. Bunzl, in short: “Museum is a team sport. No one can do something like this alone.”
