Fewer and fewer students have German as their mother tongue or speak German well enough. Combined with the teacher shortage, it is a dangerous mix. There is no such thing as quality education, warns a trade unionist. The “Krone” knows the background.
Children who do not know German well enough (and that is now the majority of preschoolers and school starters in Vienna) have been taught in German support classes for years. According to the theory, students who do not have sufficient command of the language of instruction and are therefore classified as exceptional students should receive a maximum of 20 hours of support per week in their own German lessons for a maximum of two years. In practice, these lessons do continue, but with far too many children per class.
