Loophole: Thousands of indigenous cattle disappear in Algeria

Date:

Austria’s animal transport law effectively bans exports to Algeria. However, current research by ‘The Marker’ shows that tens of thousands of four-legged friends have still ended up there and are still doing so. They suffer to death under the catastrophic conditions.

On September 1, 2023, the new version of the Austrian Animal Transport Act entered into force, in which Algeria is no longer listed as a third country to which “breeding animals may be transported by road”. Our German neighbors also rated Algeria as a high-risk state and halted exports in 2019. The loss of livestock from Germany resulted in increased demand, which may now be met by Austria. Because there is a loophole in the law.
