There is currently a lot of unrest in Austria. As forecasters predicted this weekend, winter has now returned to the country. It’s hard to think about plus temperatures, especially on Tuesday. Certainly not in the Waldviertel, where minus 21.1 degrees was measured in Schwarzau im Freiwald in the morning. Frightening: It’s getting colder!
Despite the country’s prevailing sunshine, the thickest winter coat is a must when leaving the house at the moment – because it’s bitterly cold outside! At minus 9.4 degrees, St. Pölten was the coldest state capital on Tuesday morning, followed by Eisenstadt with minus 7.7 degrees. It is currently “warmest” in the south: minus 1.4 degrees was measured in Klagenfurt this morning.
Extreme values especially in Lower Austria
But if you think it is minus ten degrees cold in St. Pölten, your breath will probably freeze in the Waldviertel. With minus 21.1 degrees on Tuesday morning, Schwarzau was the cold pole of Austria! There were also extreme values in Weitra with minus 16.6 degrees and in Litschau with minus 16 degrees. And according to experts from Geosphere Austria, the icy cold will continue to make us shiver in the coming days.
It remains bitterly cold
In the west and south it will be mostly cloudy, partly cloudy on Wednesday night. The minimum temperatures are minus 14 to minus 4 degrees. Inner Alpine and locally in the Mühlviertel and Waldviertel, temperatures around minus 15 degrees are possible again.
Also on Wednesday down to minus 20 degrees
The sun will shine again on Wednesday. Only in the west and south do the remaining clouds and patches of fog disappear, which only slowly disappear at night. In the western Danube area there are sometimes moderate and icy easterly winds. Early temperatures are minus 14 to minus 4 degrees. Temperatures of around minus 20 degrees are possible again in the Mühlviertel and Waldviertel! The maximum daytime temperatures are between minus 5 and plus 1 degrees.
The sun continues to shine throughout the country
Temperatures are expected to rise gradually from Thursday. The sun shines everywhere in Austria. Temperatures of up to plus 3 degrees are also possible during the day. However, in the morning it is still icy with temperatures down to minus 14 degrees. It looks the same on Friday, with early temperatures of minus 12 to minus 1 and daily highs of minus 2 to plus 3 degrees. Plus 5 degrees weather should be possible on Saturday, at least in the east.
Cold is especially dangerous for the homeless
Given the low temperatures, Caritas again points to the cold telephone. “It is cold. Winter is the most difficult time of the year for the homeless. Please keep your eyes open,” said Klaus Schwertner, director of Vienna’s Caritas. For people living on the streets, the freezing temperatures can be life-threatening. If you notice where a homeless person is sleeping and want to help quickly and easily, call the cold phone or cold hotline (see Twitter post).
