The future decarbonization center in Bilbao, whose “foundation stone” was laid this Friday, will have, in addition to the synthetic fuel plant, a gas plant for the use of municipal waste.
The synthetic fuel plant It is the main project of Future Decarbonization Hub (center) located in the port of Bilbao. This plant aims to reduce CO2 and convert it into carbon monoxide (CO), preventing CO2 from being released into the atmosphere.
For this, the factory uses green hydrogen, produced with renewable energy. As result, a hydrocarbon is formed “indistinguishable from petrol or diesel, with no net emissions (pollutants)”, as explained this Friday in the laying the foundation stone of the center, Repsol’s CEO, Josu Jon Imaz.
Behind the project is Petronor, the nearby Repsol and Kutxabank refinery, and it also partners with Enagás, the Basque Energy Agency (EVE) and Saudi Aramco.
This synthetic fuel plant will be powered by: renewable hydrogen produced by a 10 MW electrolyser. The project is currently being carried out in the Repsol Technology Lab, where a team of scientists is developing the technology to convert renewable hydrogen and CO2 into synthetic fuels.
To achieve this, Repsol and Saudi Aramco have joined British company Johnson Matthey and French company Axens as technology partners. For example, this new technological solution will be applied for the first time in the synthetic fuel plant in Bilbao.
The estimates given in the initial phase of the installation put it at more than 18,000 barrels per year synthetic fuel that would be produced, an amount that would cover the fuel needs of the Bilbao-Madrid air route for a whole year.

The second of the decarbonisation center’s projects will focus on the recovery of municipal waste such as paper, cardboard, plastic or fabrics. These components, which have already reached their service life, can be used to produce energy and new materials.
In this case, the obtained oil or gas will be used to partially replace the consumption of traditional fuels that Petronor needs for its production processes.
The Port of Bilbao’s Decarbonization Hub will invest in the first phase of: 103 millionabove the originally planned 80, and is expected to be about a term of two years
