The South African government accuses Israel of genocide against the Palestinians. The two-day hearing before the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague starts today, Thursday (see video above).
In its lawsuit, the South African government relies on the UN Genocide Convention, which both states ultimately signed. In total, 84 pages explain why genocide is committed against Palestinians. Serious psychological and physical damage, as well as living conditions aimed at destroying people, are caused by the military operation in the Gaza Strip.
Israel: “Absurd ritual murder legend”
“The actions are all attributable to Israel, which has failed to prevent genocide and is committing genocide in flagrant violation of the Genocide Convention,” the text reads, for example. The Israeli government describes the lawsuit as baseless, and a government spokesman even accused the South African government of spreading an “absurd ritual murder legend.” In this way a deadly hatred against the Jews should be stirred up.
The US government, which is closely allied with Israel, also rejects the accusations. “In fact, it is those who violently attack Israel who continue to openly call for the destruction of Israel and the mass murder of Jews,” said US State Department spokesman Matt Miller. The country has the right to defend itself against the ‘terrorist acts of Hamas’.
The process will likely take years
According to the statute, the International Court of Justice is intended to resolve conflicts between states as peacefully as possible. Although the rulings are binding, the UN judges do not have the power to force a state to actually implement the ruling. All you can do is call on the UN Security Council to take further action.
The process will likely take years. First, the intention is for the Israeli army to suspend its combat operations for the duration of the procedure.
