Some on foot – 37,000 people have fled fighting in Congo

Date:

At least 37,000 people have fled the Democratic Republic of Congo in four days. The reason is the armed fighting between the army and the rebel group M23, which has been active in the country since the end of last year.

In 2013, she was beaten by the military. Today M23 accuses the government in the capital Kinshasa of not ending the mobilization of fighters. The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo, on the other hand, says the group is supported by Rwanda.

Fled up to 20 kilometers on foot
As conflicts have intensified since last Sunday, residents of the affected areas of Nyiragongo and Rutshuru in particular have fled. According to the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), some refugees have walked more than 20 kilometers to reach the outskirts of Goma, the capital of North Kivu province. There are already about 1.9 million displaced persons in this region.

In 2019, the Internal Displacement Monitoring Center (IDMC) ranked the Democratic Republic of the Congo as the world’s second worst displacement crisis, after Syria. Besides the fighting between armed groups and inter-communal violence, the politically and economically unstable situation also contributes to this. Many of the more than 90 million inhabitants have no access to clean drinking water or sufficient food. About 3.5 million children of primary school age do not attend school.
