The recently formed government in France has familiar faces and a large number of men in key positions. Stéphane Séjourné, former head of the Liberal group in the EU Parliament and former partner of new Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, will take over as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
38-year-old Stéphane Séjourné will soon represent France on the international stage. His appointment as foreign minister also attracted attention because Séjourné is the former partner of new French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal.
It is not the first time that an ex-couple has served together in the French government: former President François Hollande appointed his ex-partner Ségolène Royal as Minister of the Environment.
“In Argentina I saw how an entire middle class fell into poverty and I noticed how many political decisions can determine people’s lives,” he later explains his fascination with politics. “In France and in Europe we have the impression that this cannot happen to us, but that is not true.”
Séjourné was already at Macron’s side when he was still Minister of Economic Affairs and was active as Macron’s unofficial advisor.
Once a “couple in the heart of power”
In 2019 he already had a registered partnership with Attal. The politician four years his junior also had a steep career: first he became state secretary and then government spokesperson. “One whispers in the ear of the president, the other speaks on behalf of the prime minister,” wrote the newspaper Le Monde in a double profile of the “couple at the heart of power” in 2021.
The registered partnership with Attal has now been dissolved. What both politicians have in common is that they are the youngest incumbents in their current positions. Séjourné succeeds Catherine Colonna as Minister of Foreign Affairs, who had a very good relationship with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens).
