The German train drivers’ union GDL has announced that it will end the strike at railway company Transdev early this Friday. While this strike ends at 12 noon, Deutsche Bahn’s will last until 6 p.m.
A new offer came from Transdev, which operates regional railways in North Rhine-Westphalia, the northwest, Saxony and Bavaria. The company said this will be discussed on Monday. The union was assured that it would “seriously negotiate all core demands of the current collective bargaining round,” said GDL boss Claus Weselsky.
Above all, the GDL advocates a reduction in working hours from 38 to 35 hours per week for shift workers with full wage compensation. Both Transdev and Deutsche Bahn have so far rejected this due to a lack of staff. The union had therefore spoken of failed negotiations at both companies.
Usual train offer from Saturday
At Deutsche Bahn, however, the end of the strike is not yet in sight. The strike was announced until today, Friday, 6 p.m. Until then and for the hours afterwards, cancellations and delays are expected.
Most connections to and through Germany from Austria are currently cancelled, an ÖBB spokesperson said. “Many passengers have also postponed their trip to Germany.” However, some connections outside Passau (border station, note) to Nuremberg from Vienna or Linz and from Innsbruck to Munich were still active. There are no restrictions for the Deutsches Eck. Western Railway trains were not affected by the strike at all.
“We have the feeling that passengers have become accustomed to the GDL strike,” said a Deutsche Bahn spokeswoman (see also the poll at Regensburg station in the video above). There have been no long queues or overcrowded trains in recent days. The usual train services will be available again in Germany and Austria from Saturday morning. The night trains to Amsterdam and Hamburg will continue running again on Saturday evening.
