Missile base targeted – The US again attacked Houthi rebels in Yemen

Date:

The US again attacked a position of the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen on Saturday evening. The US military said the target was a radar system. The Iran-backed Houthi television channel previously reported “a series” of attacks on the Yemeni capital Sanaa. Initially nothing was known about possible victims.

The attack comes in response to weeks of Houthi attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea. The US and Britain, with the support of other allies, had already bombed militia positions in Yemen on Friday evening, krone.at reported. Nearly 30 rebel military sites were targeted in the first retaliatory strike, it said.

Tomahawk missile attack
“This attack was conducted by USS Carney (DDG 64) using Tomahawk missiles. It was a follow-up operation on a specific military target related to the January 12 attacks. This is intended to prevent the Houthi movement from attacking maritime vessels, including merchant ships,” said a statement from the US Central Command (CENTCOM) on X (formerly Twitter) about the new attack on the rebels.

In the first retaliatory strike, nearly 30 Houthi military locations were attacked, said Lt. Gen. Douglas Sims, who is responsible for military operations at the Pentagon. The evaluation has not yet been completed. But he knows the rebels’ options for further attacks have been weakened. The Houthis had announced retaliation and said they would continue their attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea reportedly linked to Israel.

Houthis attack cargo ships in the Red Sea
Since the outbreak of the Gaza war between Israel and the Islamist Hamas, the Houthis have repeatedly attacked ships with alleged Israeli connections in the Red Sea. Large shipping companies are increasingly avoiding the route. The Houthis also repeatedly attack Israel directly with drones and missiles.
