The African continent is currently being hit by military takeovers. Generalizations are dangerous. Especially since Europe bears a large share of the blame.
Successful coup attempts in Africa make headlines. If you look at the map, you tend to speak of a ‘coup belt’. Arno Sonderegger, an Africa expert at the University of Vienna, warns: “The processes each have different local causes and protagonists with individually different interests and motivations.”
This is also confirmed by expert Belachew Gebrewold, professor at the Management Center Innsbruck: “The putsch is a symptom. The cause is poor government work.” He also does not want to deny the role of France. The African continent has been disproportionately affected by attempted military coups.
Gebrewold sees four factors. First: the patriarchal culture of Africa. Second, colonization prevented the development of democratic institutions. Thirdly, because of colonization they have become strongly Western-oriented and have failed to establish their own state identity. The tribalism that still prevails in many places also makes this more difficult, according to Gebrewold. Conversely, the West is also the scapegoat for all shortcomings.
The interaction of these factors makes the formation of functioning democracies more difficult. The growing influence of China and Russia still favors putschists, but they are not the cause, according to Gebrewold. “In democratic states there would be no need for coups,” Gebrewold said.
