Former US President Donald Trump must reimburse the New York Times newspaper almost $393,000 (about 360,000 euros) in legal fees, court costs and expenses due to a failed lawsuit.
This was decided by a judge of the Supreme Court of the State of New York on Friday (local time), according to media reports. The newspaper reported on Trump’s secret finances in 2018, but he lost his lawsuit against it.
The newspaper had reported that Trump had not made a large fortune on his own, as he portrayed, but had received hundreds of millions of dollars from his father’s company over the years using questionable methods and tax evasion.
The newspaper won the Pulitzer Prize for Trump’s report
The newspaper received the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for this reporting. Trump later sued her for $100 million (about €91 million). However, Judge Robert Reed dismissed Trump’s lawsuit against the New York Times and three of its journalists last year.
The Republican’s lawyers called the amount requested to reimburse legal costs “exorbitant, excessive and unreasonable.” Trump had sued the newspaper, his niece Mary Trump and others.
Trump spoke of a “treasonous plot”
He alleged that his niece and New York Times journalists were “involved in a treasonous conspiracy” to obtain confidential and highly sensitive documents. They exploited this for their own benefit.
Reed rejected that claim in his ruling in May. He said Trump’s allegations against the New York Times were “constitutionally untenable.” Trump continues the lawsuit against his niece. His lawyer said Friday that the former president would file claims against Mary Trump. Trump’s niece, who has long publicly criticized her uncle, revealed in a tell-all 2020 book that she leaked tax documents to the newspaper.
Since the end of his presidency, Trump has been faced with legal problems or investigations on various fronts that could have legal consequences for the 77-year-old.
