Repatriation from Africa – Death on Kilimanjaro: waiting for Philipp P.

Date:

The body of the Innviertler who died on Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa still cannot be brought to Austria. There are still many matters that need to be clarified in advance, which of course puts pressure on the family that wants to say goodbye to Philipp P.

There’s probably nothing worse than losing your own child. But certain things make the situation worse. That is exactly the case with the P. family from Schwand im Innkreis. As reported, the family’s 27-year-old son died last Tuesday from altitude sickness while climbing Africa’s highest mountain, the 5,895-meter Kilimanjaro. Since receiving news of his death, the family has been working to repatriate the body so they can say their goodbyes. “The family is currently doing everything they can to get Philipp back. It is important to clarify everything in advance with the insurance company and the funeral director. “Everything else doesn’t matter right now,” said Daniela Probst, mayor of Schwand and a close family friend who is doing her best to protect herself from the public.

Clarification from the insurer
The biggest problem is that the sporty young man died outside Europe, which complicates everything even more. In principle, according to Austrian law: “A transfer of the body or urn from abroad is only possible if it is ensured that all associated costs are borne by the surviving relatives – possibly through appropriate insurance. Transporting a body from abroad entails very high costs and is only possible if these costs can actually be covered.” And that is exactly what the family is working on with the insurance company. Once this is clear, it is important to organize return transport; this is where funeral homes can help. Philipp P. will then make his last journey to Schwand.

Background still unclear
It is currently unclear whether there have been any problems or delays in the reception of the Innviertler in Tanzania. “The family is not concerned with that at all at the moment. That’s no problem either. It was a tragedy that no one could have predicted,” says the mayor of Schwand.
