According to Israeli Defense Minister Joav Gallant, the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas wants to bring the war from the Gaza Strip to the West Bank. “Hamas’ goal is to burn Judea and Samaria (Hebrew for West Bank), and if possible the Temple Mount (in Jerusalem),” Gallant said Sunday during a briefing with military commanders in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
With its terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, Hamas failed to demoralize Israelis or drive a wedge between Israel and the US, Gallant continued. That is why they now plan to “burn” the West Bank and the Temple Mount, a holy site for both Jews and Muslims.
“In this regard, your job is to prepare for war, maintain force readiness and gather relevant intelligence,” Gallant told the military.
Tensions and conflicts have also increased in the West Bank since the start of the Gaza war following the terrorist attack last October. On Friday, the Israeli army shot dead three Palestinians who tried to attack a Jewish settlement near Hebron with firearms. The Palestinians, in turn, complain about the increased violence by Jewish settlers against their villages and olive groves.
