In the war against Ukraine, Russia relies on drones from Iran: Shahed-136 kamikaze explosive drones proved to be a cheap weapon for Putin’s invading army against Ukrainian infrastructure. The slow Iranian drones, which have been compared to flying mopeds or chainsaws because of their noise, have been shot down almost daily by Ukrainian air defenses for months. However, a new model now offers previously unknown challenges.
The explosive drone Shahed-136 is well known in Ukraine: when the characteristic sound of the “flying moped” is heard, the Ukrainian air defense fires at it with relatively cheap old anti-aircraft guns or – in the last few meters – even with guns. Due to their low speed, the drones, which Russia would now produce under license under the name ‘Geran-2’, are an easy target. However, this is no longer the case with a mysterious successor model, the first examples of which have already been spotted over Ukraine.
