In the extremely wealthy Sultanate of Brunei, Prince Abdul Mateen married his fiancée Anisha Rosnah during ten days of lavish celebrations. Thousands lined the streets and cheered on the newlyweds. The wedding celebrations started on January 7 and ended on Tuesday.
The 32-year-old, who was once considered one of Asia’s most eligible bachelors, is the tenth child of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. So he is not heir apparent – but the lavish celebration, including a procession through the capital Bandar Seri Begawan in an open Rolls-Royce, was still worthy of a king.
Prince posted photos on social media
Prince Mateen posted photos of the various ceremonies on social networks, where he has millions of followers. “Thank you for celebrating this special occasion with us. It means a lot to us,” he wrote. His wife Anisha is the granddaughter of an important advisor to the sultan, considered one of the richest men in the world. She reportedly owns a fashion label and parts of a tourism company.
The bride wore a tiara decorated with diamonds
“Anisha Rosnah captivated guests in a simple white wedding dress with long sleeves and a beautiful bejeweled bridal veil covering her hair,” wrote Harper’s Bazaar Arabia, praising the bride’s elegance. “To complete the look, Anisha wore a diamond-embellished tiara.”
Foreign state guests also traveled to the sultanate for the wedding, including Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the Borneo Bulletin newspaper reported. Representatives of various royal families also participated, including from Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.
Brunei is one of the richest countries
The Islamic Sultanate of Brunei is located on the Southeast Asian island of Borneo, the remaining parts of which belong to Malaysia and Indonesia. Thanks to its large oil and gas reserves, Brunei is one of the richest countries in the world.
At the same time, the human rights situation there is repeatedly criticized. The authoritarian sultan began introducing sharia in 2014. Homosexuality in particular carries severe penalties.
