Trump and Abbott Interventions Open US Gun Lobby Annual Convention

Date:

Greg Abbott has considered that in cases such as Tuesday’s Uvalde shooting it is necessary to focus on tackling mental health issues, and has announced measures to support family members.

America’s largest gun lobby, the National Rifle Association (NRA for its acronym in English) opened the doors of its . this Friday annual convention in Houston, in the shadow of the last armed massacre last Tuesday

The event was attended by the former US president. Donald Trump (2017-2021), as well as the Texas governor, the conservative Greg Abbottwho opened this year’s convention returned after the last two were canceled due to the pandemic.

Abbott has defended and considered firearms: “wrong” to focus on asking for more control by criminal background checks of their buyers, after Tuesday’s shooting at a school in the state.

The Republican governor has indicated that it is “possible” that public opinion is targeting “the wrong thing,” especially gun background checks, which he says have been irrelevant when it comes to preventing past shootings.

“Anyone who suggests we should focus on background checks rather than mental health, I suggest they are wrong,” Abbott said, adding that the focus should be on tackle mental problems

The governor also announced a series of measures to support the families of the 21 who died in the Uvalde shooting.

“The state of Texas has robust resources in place to ensure that these families devastated by this crime, as well as the entire community, will receive assistance in all their needs,” he said.

He added that an anonymous donor has given 175,000 dollars to “defray all costs of the affected families for funeral services” and pointed out that mental health care will be provided “to students, teachers, law enforcement and everyone in the community who needs it”.

For his part, former President Trump has demanded a “complete overhaul” of security in American schools in his speech. He has also called for a “drastic change” for the US to address mental health after the events in Uvalde.
