Raids on Tenerife – gang arrested: more than 100 victims from Austria

Date:

Major strike by Spanish police against a criminal fraud network: During raids in the south of the holiday island of Tenerife, 33 suspects were handcuffed who allegedly defrauded tourists of around four million euros for at least two years. To date, there have been 1,805 victims from 18 countries. Among them there are more than 100 Austrians.

The criminals’ target is: elderly people with less technical experience.

Investigators seized one million euros in cash, and another million was distributed among more than 300 bank accounts, all of which were frozen. Authorities also seized 42 properties, dozens of jewelry and 17 luxury cars. To date, there have been 1,805 victims from 18 countries. Among them there are more than 100 Austrians.

Lured with bargains
The gang’s scam was as unscrupulous as it was inventive: in supermarkets in and around the towns of Adeje and Arona, the criminals lured their victims with bargains on new mobile phones and tablets. The supposed device setup service including app installation was free.

Bank details stolen
What the holidaymakers did not suspect: as part of the sales transaction, the gang ‘sucked’ bank and credit card details. As soon as the tourists left the island, their accounts were immediately looted. And the gang made a big profit; the five leaders in particular treated themselves to a life full of luxury.
