It is unlikely that there will be snow warnings across Austria on Wednesday. Weather expert Nikolas Zimmermann from UBIMET is certain of this. However, you should prepare for icy conditions, especially in the north of Upper and Lower Austria. There is a very simple explanation why residents of Vienna’s central and northern districts were surprised by a blanket of snow in the early morning hours…
On Wednesday morning there was a small white surprise in the central and northern districts of Vienna. Because there the so-called industrial snow currently gives a wintery impression. “This is snow caused by local emissions – mainly water vapor and condensation nuclei,” the UBIMET experts explain. “Ultimately, it is snowfall that is indirectly caused by people and industrial installations. It would not exist without industrial facilities,” Zimmermann explains to the “Krone”.
According to Zimmermann, this phenomenon happens every now and then, but some factors have to fit together. A similar case occurred in Vienna more than five years ago.
Snow is not harmful to health
The snow is not harmful to health. But you still shouldn’t eat it, Zimmermann notes.
The snow in the federal capital may have come as a surprise, especially to those who were aware of the current weather warnings in the morning. According to Zimmermann, no snow warnings would be issued for Wednesday. You still have to be careful on the roads, because instead of snow, freezing rain can currently cause chaos – the risk of icy conditions increases. “The north of Upper and Lower Austria is particularly affected,” said the meteorologist.
Danger of black ice on Austrian roads
The freezing rain has already started lightly in the Innviertel. It is also lightly drizzling in the Bregenzerwald on the border with Bavaria. During the day there will also be a start in the Waldviertel. The daily maximum temperatures on Wednesday are 8 to 11 degrees.
