Daily fighting – Army chief: Danger of war on the border with Lebanon is increasing

Date:

Israeli army chief Herzi Halevi sees a growing threat of war in the north of the country, on the border with Lebanon. “I don’t know when the war in the north will happen,” said a statement from Halevi, distributed on Wednesday during his visit to northern Israel. “But I can tell you that the chance of this happening in the coming months is much greater than in the past.”

There is currently daily fighting on the Israeli-Lebanese border. These are taking place between the Israeli army and the Lebanon-based Shiite militia Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran and linked to the radical Islamic Palestinian organization Hamas.

Hamas fired rockets
Hamas’s armed wing said on Wednesday it had fired 20 rockets into Israel from southern Lebanon. This is in response to the ‘massacres’ in the Gaza Strip and the assassination of the Hamas deputy chief in Beirut earlier this month. The Israeli army, for its part, announced on Wednesday that it had carried out airstrikes on targets in southern Lebanon and also attacked “terrorist infrastructure”.

Conflicts increased dramatically
Clashes on the Israeli-Lebanese border have increased dramatically since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7. Since then, more than 190 people have been killed in Lebanon, including 140 Hezbollah fighters and more than 20 civilians, including three journalists, according to an AFP count. According to Israeli authorities, nine soldiers and six civilians were killed on the Israeli side.

Hamas fighters entered Israel from the Gaza Strip on October 7 and began massacres and atrocities against civilians. Israel subsequently declared war on Hamas and launched a large-scale military campaign in the Gaza Strip.
