Experts are concerned: Trump wants full immunity for presidents

Date:

Former President Donald Trump, who has been plagued by numerous lawsuits, has called for “complete immunity” for the US president. He argued that the head of state of the United States could hold office without immunity or exercise it “improperly.” However, no US president has ever had this problem before: Trump is the first former US head of state to face charges.

American presidents should be given immunity to be able to make difficult decisions, Trump argued in the online service Truth Social that he founded. This need is more important than the danger that presidents pose when they break the rules. The Republican emphasized that immunity should apply even to acts that “cross a red line.”

Four criminal cases against Trump in the election year
Trump wants to face Democratic incumbent Joe Biden in the November presidential elections. According to polls, he has the best chance of being nominated by his party for the November 5 elections. At the same time, Trump is facing four criminal proceedings this election year. However, Trump’s lawyers argue that Trump enjoys “absolute immunity” and cannot be prosecuted for actions within his term of office.

In early December, federal judge Tanya Chutkan rejected Trump’s immunity on the grounds that there is no law protecting an ex-president from criminal prosecution. Trump’s lawyers have appealed their decision, which is now being heard by the federal appeals court.

Criticism: President with full immunity is a ‘dictator’
Former U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance commented on Trump’s claim: “One of the obvious problems with this (just one of many) is that no former president has ever been indicted. Only Trump.” Former Rep. Joe Walsh suggested: “A president with ‘full immunity’ is a king, a dictator.”

The judges of the appeals court in Washington expressed their skepticism about the request for immunity. If a decision goes against him, Trump can appeal to the Supreme Court. “God bless the Supreme Court,” Trump continued on Truth Social, emphasizing that he hoped for an “easy decision” from the court.

A trial against Trump in federal court on allegations of election manipulation is currently scheduled to start on March 4, in the middle of the presidential primaries. However, the trial cannot take place without prior clarification on the immunity issue. It is therefore unclear whether the deadline can be met.
