The 14.8 million tons of lithium were spread across two locations in the southern province of Phang Nga, deputy government spokesman Rudklao Intawong Suwankiri said on The Nation television channel. “We’re trying to figure out how much we can use of the resources we find. “It takes time,” Rudklao added.

Lithium is an important component of batteries in electric cars, smartphones and other electronic devices. The Thai government wants to make the country an important location for the production of electric vehicles in Asia.

A government spokeswoman hopes for further investments
In December, two Chinese companies announced investments worth 2.3 billion baht (59 million euros) to strengthen Thailand as a production center for electric cars. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin also met with industry representatives, including the deputy head of Bosch, at the World Economic Forum in Davos to promote further investment. In this context, the discovery of lithium is “good news,” government spokeswoman Rudklao said.
