All of Styria is dressed like a fool these days. In the capital of Styria, the big celebration on Shrove Tuesday leaves a rather stale aftertaste.
The Carnival celebration in the Bermuda Triangle in Graz has been taking place for 31 years. However, since last year there has been an important innovation that has not only created enthusiasm: between the Glockenspiel, Färberplatz and Mehlplatz, only those who pay admission are allowed to celebrate. You pay six euros for the party with about 10,000 costumed people; Last year it was five euros… If you buy your ticket in advance online, you pay four euros.
Scandal or just a contribution to costs?
Many people from Graz and partygoers from all over Styria speak of a real scandal that you have to pay entrance fee to a party on a public square. And some restaurateurs also have little use for this innovation. “We do not want to see this as an entrance fee, but as a contribution to expenses,” organizer Robert Helbig tries to calm down.
Regulations are becoming increasingly strict
In return, visitors also get some improvements in comfort and safety: “We used to have 22 guards, this year we have 55. Before we had 14 portable toilets, now there are 49.” But according to his own statements, there were even 60 security guards last year…
Regardless, regulations were tightened year after year, Helbig says, until the event could no longer be managed by local innkeepers alone. “But there are few complaints about it; only two or three reached me.” Residents receive their own free passes.
The parade on Tuesday starts at 12.15 pm, the party from 1.30 pm and a DJ from 4 pm.
