On Friday evening, severe storms again passed over parts of Austria. Carinthia, Styria and Burgenland were particularly affected. For example, the municipality of Rohr in the Burgenland district of Güssing was hit by severe storms for the third time in four days. The emergency services were again heavily challenged.
“It’s just terrible that this has happened to us three times in the last three or four days,” Mayor of Rohr in Burgenland, Gernot Kremsner, said in an interview with “Krone” the day after the violent storms.
Location is in the valley
Residents of houses at the entrance of a city were especially hard hit. For the third time, the buildings were flooded, as was the basement. The reason: the municipality is located in a valley where the water converges from several sides, the mayor explains. Especially at the entrance to Bocksdorf this piles up because of the geology.
Interview with the mayor of Rohr, Gernot Kremsner. Deputy Mayor Gabriele Hirschböck also got an idea of the dramatic situation in the city.
Due to the small outflow, however, the precipitation masses could not flow away, so that there was again flooding. According to Kremsner, the currently high rainfall rates are actually very rare, “and the fear is just that this year – now it’s May – we will always have to live with this fear in the future”.
Motorists trapped by masses of water
The heavy rainfall had also led to flooding in the Jennersdorf district. Cellars were full, streets were flooded, a driver was trapped in his vehicle by the water and had to be freed by firefighters.
Fire brigade operation in Mogersdorf:

The locks opened around 9.30pm on Friday. In any case, there was no sleep for the fire brigade, the clean-up work continued until deep into the night and continued on Saturday.
Storms also in Carinthia and Styria
Heavy storms also raged in southeastern Styria and Carinthia on Friday evening. There were floods and in Carinthia, hailstones the size of golf balls fell like bullets to the ground. The fire brigade was constantly in use.
