In 2022, a record 14 bear nests were reported in Trentino, northern Italy. 25 bears were born. The females are sedentary and inhabit an area of 1,700 square kilometers, reported Giulia Zanotelli, councilor for agriculture, forestry, hunting and fishing in the province of Trento.
According to Zanotelli, bears have been intensively monitored since early 2023 to observe the growth trend in wildlife. The last monitoring took place in 2021 and resulted in a stock of between 73 and 92 units.
The number of wolves is also increasing
An increase in wolf numbers was also reported, with 24 resident packs and five packs migrating between the province and adjacent areas, for a total of 194 individuals. In 2022, 14 wolves were killed as a result of road and railway accidents.
The total damage recorded was 440, of which 301 were caused by bears and 139 by wolves. A total of 625 animals were killed. Since the start of the EU-funded Life Ursus bear reintroduction project in 1999, Trentino has regularly reported on the carnivore situation in the province.
