Drama in Bulgaria – 18 migrants suffocated in trucks: 4 arrests

Date:

Not far from the Bulgarian capital Sofia, 18 migrants were found dead in a truck on Friday, the Interior Ministry said. The migrants are young Afghan men. According to the initial findings, they were suffocating. Four people have now been arrested.

All four of those arrested are believed to be related to the case. The public prosecutor initially did not want to say whether it was the fugitive driver or the smuggler. The truck had Bulgarian license plates from Targowiste in northeastern Bulgaria.

14 survivors
According to police, the truck was carrying more than 50 migrants who hid under piles of wood. 14 survivors have been taken to hospitals in the capital Sofia, state radio BNR reports. Some of them had breathing problems.

Two drivers fled
The migrants, who are now being treated, told police that both drivers of the truck got out of the truck when they discovered the bodies. It is still unclear why the truck came to a stop near the village of Lukorsko. The Ministry of the Interior ruled out a traffic accident.

The owner of the truck has since been arrested. “We hope to get more information from the 16 DNA samples taken from the truck, including about the drivers,” Deputy Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov added.
