A Boeing 747 cargo plane from the American airline Atlas Air made an emergency landing in Miami after an engine failure. The plane bound for Puerto Rico “suffered with an engine failure shortly after takeoff,” an airline spokesman said. The emergency landing then took place “in complete safety”. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the incident on Thursday evening and announced an investigation.
Apparently, several Miami residents also directly witnessed the incident. Videos circulating in the media and social networks allegedly show the engine failure.
In the footage, plumes of fire are repeatedly emitted from an engine before extinguishing.
Airplane eight years old
Citing data from Flightradar24, Reuters reported that the plane was eight years old. The 747-8 model is powered by four GEnx engines from General Electric.
Also problems with passenger planes
Boeing declined to comment when asked and referred to airline Atlas Air, which is already under great pressure. Following an incident in early January involving a 737 MAX 9 passenger aircraft, the FAA has launched an investigation into possible deficiencies in quality controls.
Shortly after takeoff from Portland in the northwestern US state of Oregon, part of the passenger plane’s cabin wall flew out. The plane then turned around and made an emergency landing in Portland about twenty minutes later. No one was seriously injured in the incident.
The FAA ordered immediate inspections for approximately 170 aircraft of the same configuration. Amid the series of accidents, Boeing recently received a major order for 737 Max jets from India. Indian airline Akasa Air, which was launched only two years ago, placed a heavy order for 150 jets from the 737-Max 8 and Max 10 series.
