More than 150 people died during Halloween celebrations in the South Korean capital Seoul in 2022 (see video above). Now the police chief has been charged for ‘failing to take necessary action’. It is said that more security forces should have been deployed because of the possible dangers.
Police Chief Kim Kwang Ho could have foreseen the dangers at the time, prosecutors said. She accuses him of professional negligence that has caused people to be injured or even killed. Kim is the highest-ranking police officer to stand trial for the incident. However, the Public Prosecution Service has already charged other officials.
Relatives are demanding legal action
She hadn’t made a decision about Kim yet. Families of the victims were disappointed that the decision to prosecute was made so late. He must “immediately resign” and be brought to trial, they demanded.
As reported, on the evening of October 29, 2022, approximately 100,000 mostly young people crowded the narrow streets of Seoul’s Itaewon entertainment district without police intervention.
The mass panic left 150 people dead, including an Austrian. More than 80 others were injured. The Halloween festival from the US is actually celebrated on the night of October 31 to November 1.
