The pressure on the ÖVP is increasing! Child and youth activists from all over Austria are now calling for the rapid implementation of the ban on bite and attack training for private dogs, which Federal Minister Rauch has called for. In the future, this should only be possible for guide dogs in government service.
Children and teenagers can benefit from having a dog as a companion. Responsibility for a pet promotes important life skills such as caring and empathy.
Grew up with a dog
Regular exercise and play with your dog contributes to physical activity, supports the development of motor skills and helps promote a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, bonding with a dog can provide emotional stability and improve social skills as children learn to care for a living creature
Crucial from the perspective of children’s rights
The child and youth lawyer is now also involved in the current debate about working dog sports. “In particular, the right to health and the right to play are limited by possible biting accidents, which can occur due to the mixing of triggers outside the practice area,” says Dunja Gharwal of the Vienna Children and Youth Lawyer.
“The participation of children and young people in exercises in which violence and dominance scenarios take place as part of dog training must also be critically viewed from a children’s rights perspective,” the expert continued.
Reason for this: Just a few weeks ago, a dog trainer from Lower Austria proudly posted a video of training with his protection-trained Malinois. What’s scary is that the dog “attack” happened on a 12-year-old boy. And the dog trainer also boasted that the boy was participating in such training for the first time. Irresponsible – and unimaginable if something had gone wrong here.
Strong statement
In a joint statement, child and youth activists from all nine states argue in favor of drawing up regulations that are in line with children’s rights. And they support the Animal Protection Alliance’s urgent call for action and Federal Minister Johannes Rauch’s call against private bite and attack training.
