Workers evacuated – gas terminal in the Leningrad region caught fire

Date:

A terminal on the grounds of Russian natural gas producer Novatek in the Leningrad region caught fire on Sunday night. There were no injuries at the Baltic Sea port of Ust-Luga and staff had been evacuated, the region’s governor, Alexander Drozdenko, said on Sunday, according to Tass news agency. The highest alert has been declared in the Kingisepp district. No reason for the fire was given. Ust-Luga is close to NATO member Estonia.

Ukrainian online media “Ukrainska Pravda” published videos on the X platform (formerly Twitter) showing the gas plant catching fire. In the footage you can see flames shooting high into the night sky.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, a drone from Ukraine was intercepted in the Leningrad region last week. She is said to have caused no damage. The Soviet name Leningrad is still used in Russia for the area around Saint Petersburg.

Gas factory processes products for export
Drozdenko added that the Ministry of Emergency Situations and local fire brigade units were involved in the firefighting work at the gas plant. According to the information, Novatek processes gas into fuel in Ust-Luga. From there the products are exported to international markets. The complex was put into use in 2013.

Russia has been waging a war of aggression against neighboring Ukraine for almost two years. As a result, Russian territory is repeatedly attacked – especially in the border region and against military targets and key Russian infrastructure. The number of victims and damage is disproportionate to the consequences of the war in the attacked Ukraine.
