The Indonesian police have arrested Antonio Strangio, a prominent boss of the ‘Ndrangheta, the mafia in the southern Italian Calabria, on the island of Bali. The 32-year-old has been wanted internationally since 2016 for drug trafficking and other crimes. He then fled to Australia.
The Strangio family is one of the most influential clans of the Ndrangheta. In 2007, six Italians were shot dead in front of a restaurant in Duisburg. The trigger is said to have been a feud between two ‘Ndrangheta clans. The main perpetrator Giovanni Strangio was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2011. The murders are among the worst Mafia crimes in Germany.
Italy takes out mafia bosses
Last week, Edgardo Greco, who had been on the run since 2006, was arrested in Saint Etienne, France. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for a double murder in 1991. A European arrest warrant from the Catanzaro public prosecutor was available against Greco.
Italy has intensified the fight against organized crime. Three weeks ago, Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro, who has been on the run for 30 years, was arrested. He was considered the number one of the Cosa Nostra in Sicily.
