Thanks to a new analysis of DNA traces, a murder of a jogger in France has apparently been solved after about fifteen years: the jogger Caroline Marcel was strangled and thrown into a river near Orleans in 2008. The most important clue to a suspect was now found on the victim’s car key.
The jogger Caroline Marcel was murdered in June 2008 while jogging in Olivet, south of the city of Orleans. She was strangled from behind with her own T-shirt. The body of the then 45-year-old was found in the Loiret River.
Here, the researchers explain the breakthrough in the cold case:
The cold case could not be solved at the time: there were no traces, witnesses, suspects or fingerprints. In 2022, the investigation was finally transferred to a newly created unit that deals with unsolved cases.
The suspect is the father of a two-year-old girl
Great progress has been made in analyzing DNA evidence in the fifteen years since the crime. Traces on surfaces that were previously unusable can now be examined. DNA on the victim’s car key led investigators to 33-year-old Stanislas A., who lived undisturbed in Ariège with his wife and two-year-old daughter. He was taken into custody. At the time of the crime he was only 18 years old.

The suspect is no stranger to the police: he was already convicted of sexual abuse in 2006. A. denies the murder of the jogger – according to “Liberation” he could not explain to the officers his DNA traces on the victim’s key.
