A marathon trial will start in Linz on Thursday, January 25: the Iraqi (42) who stabbed his wife in Linz on January 9, 2023 and then seriously injured two police officers during the rampage, will have to be tried for three days. It’s a triple murder charge.
The Linz Public Prosecutor’s Office requested admission to a forensic therapeutic center because, according to a psychiatric report, the man was not mentally competent due to paranoid schizophrenia. There are many witnesses, experts and stakeholders who have their say. Therefore, the process takes three days.
Stabbed and strangled
Had the Iraqi been sane at the time of the crime, he would have faced three charges of attempted murder, dangerous threats, attempted and completed aggravated robbery, and offenses under the Arms Act. According to the Public Prosecution Service, the man is accused of first trying to kill his wife with a kitchen knife on January 9 of the previous year. He allegedly stabbed her three times before trying to strangle her with a rope.
Service weapon removed
While fleeing in a car through Linz, he allegedly ran towards two officers at a police blockade and drove around them. He then apparently took the injured police officer’s service weapon, a rifle, and allegedly pointed it at the officer lying on the ground, who was also seriously injured, and at another police officer.
Accident involving stolen vehicle
During his rampage, he also threatened other motorists with a weapon to force them to give up their car, which, according to the Public Prosecution Service, succeeded in three cases. He continued his escape in one of the vehicles, but caused an accident and was eventually arrested.
Instruction requested
After January 25, January 30 and February 1 are still scheduled. Due to the man’s mental illness, which was diagnosed by an expert, the Public Prosecution Service demands that he be admitted to a forensic therapeutic center.
